I would like to share my story of hope and helplessness when faced with elderly parents needing aged care advice/assistance.
I was all consumed with the huge decisions placed on me to help my parents. I relied on friends and work colleagues to steer me to the ‘right organisations’ for support. These right organisations then referred me to other organisations for further assistance.… Read more

In 1999, following my retirement my wife and I returned to Bundaberg to assist in the supervision of our elderly parents (all well into their 80s at that stage). Initially we sought and received some “in home” assistance.
My mother had early signs of alzheimers and, my father, mobility problems. This assistance helped for a very short period.… Read more

Children of older people lead extremely busy lives, they have jobs, they are caring for parents, their children, grandchildren and sometimes great grandchildren and to have this suddenly thrust upon them when a parent needs care is daunting and distressing, at a time that is already emotionally upsetting.… Read more

My husband has been working in an aged care facility since we were married in 2010. We have been wanting to start a family of our own but are financially incapable of doing so with his current income.
For someone who has to feed, dress, wash, toilet… and do everything else in between to keep somebody’s grandmother or grandfather alive, and to do the same tasks as performed only by nurses not all that long ago – for him and everyone else in the sector to be paid $17.10 an hour is to spit in their face.… Read more

I have been a DON/Facility Manager since 1999 in large and medium sized homes, low care and high care and retirement villages.
The pace of work has continued unabated in order to maintain standards and improvements. 8 hour days would be great, most managers work 10 regularly.
The ability to attract high quality flexible registered nurses who recognise aged care as a specialty is an ongoing issue.… Read more
